Anne de Boer and Erik Frijlink win Wubbo Ockelsprijs 2010
|
Anne de Boer and Erik Frijlink were awarded the Wubbo Ockeslprijs 2010. They received the award for their work on the development and commercialization of the innovative Novolizer dry powder inhaler. Erik Frijlink is a researcher at Top Institute Pharma and involved in projects in the areas of design quality, stability of protein-based medicines, eradication of resistent bacteria, and nanoscience and blood-brain barrier penetration. Recently, a patent was published for one of these projects for the production of heat resistant oxytocine, a medicine to prevent excessive bleeding during childbirth. TI Pharma postdoc appointed at Griffin Discoveries
Dr Herman Lim, who worked as a postdoc in TI Pharma’s project CXC chemokine receptors, has recently joined Griffin Discoveries (GD). GD is a drug discovery company that develops innovative G protein-coupled receptors (GPCR) targeting drugs for therapeutic areas with unmet clinical need. The company spun-out of VU University Amsterdam in 2009. Its founders are Dr Rogier Smits, Dr Iwan de Esch en Dr Rob Leurs.

TI Pharma researcher is awarded EFMC Prize for Young Medicinal Chemist in Academia

Andreas Bender has received the EFMC Prize for Young Medicinal Chemist in Academia which will be awarded at the XXIst International Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry in Brussels from 5-9 September 2010. The EFMC Prize is established by the European Federation for Medicinal Chemistry (EFMC) to acknowledge and recognize an outstanding young medicinal chemist (<35 years old) working in academia within Europe. The prize is given annually and consists of a diploma, € 1.000 and an invitation for a short presentation at an EFMC symposium. Andreas Bender is a TI Pharma researcher and involved in the project GPCR forum, a project that focusses on identifying novel modulators for established targets.

‘Reap the rewards of the investments made’
The total investment by the Netherlands in education, knowledge and innovation lag in comparison to the best-performing knowledge societies. In the latest annual evaluation of the Dutch Innovation Platform’s Knowledge Investment Agenda (KIA) workgroup it is evident that the Netherlands has not caught up with the global top 5 in the past year.

Dutch public-private partnership invests 28 million euros in research on personalized medicine
The three Dutch Top Institutes for life-science research (BMM, CTMM and TI Pharma) announced a joint investment of € 28 million in innovative research. TI Pharma approved two projects: PC-MAbs and The ProGraft Study. The first focuses on patient-derived anti-prostate-cancer antibodies. The second focuses on optimizing the applicability of stem cell therapy.

International interest in Dutch Database of Rare Metabolic Diseases
TI Pharma’s project Sustainable orphan drug development is raising a lot of international interest in the Dutch Database of Rare Metabolic Diseases. Project leader Gepke Visser from University Medical Center Utrecht comments: “Researchers from all over the world are showing interest, because our database is unique."

Publication: Experts present future of pharmaceutical sciences in 2020

Nature Reviews Drug Discovery published an article about potential future scenarios for the pharmaceutical sciences. Three of the six authors are part of TI Pharma or linked to one of its projects: Daan Crommelin (Scientific Director TI Pharma), Pieter Stolk (Strategy & Business Development TI Pharma) and Hubert Leufkens (Principal Investigator of the Escher project).

Daan Crommelin will assume the position of editor of the Advances in Pharmaceutical Sciences book series. Professor Crommelin will develop the aims and scope of this emerging series, establish an editorial board of topical experts, and collaborate with the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) and its publishing partner, Springer.
