TI Pharma researcher wins $100,000 grant

Shahid Khan, one of the researchers on TI Pharma’s Malaria project, has been awarded one of the Grand Challenges Exploration grants by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. This is an exploratory research grant worth $100,000 that covers the costs of what they regard as innovative projects for 1 year. Read more >>

Knowledge based value creation in Pharma

Mid October Prosensa, the Dutch based biopharmaceutical company focusing on RNA modulating therapeutics, and GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) announced that they have entered into an exclusive worldwide collaboration for the development and commercialization of RNA based therapeutics for Duchene Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). Jorg Janssen, Business Strategy Manager of TI Pharma, says: “This collaboration is a good example of value creation in the Netherlands, building upon our country’s strong knowledge base.”

TI Pharma reviews its entire program

The initial funding for TI Pharma was allocated for four years and therefore our current program is nearly half-way. Currently, an independent Mid-Term Review, chaired by Professor Cees Veerman, is being carried out for the entire institute. The review will take place during the next months and the final report will be submitted on February 1, 2010. The Mid-Term Review is necessary to evaluate the success of our institute and to assess the long term plans and financing.

 




TI Pharma attracts international interest


On September 10, the Danish Council for Strategic Research visited TI Pharma. The purpose of their visit was to learn about the unique Dutch approach to public-private collaboration and the concrete results that are being booked by our institute.

International discussion on complex drugs
Workshop Complex Systems, October 7, Leiden

On October 7, 25 international academic and industrial experts and regulators discussed the bioequivalance of Complex Drugs in Leiden. TI Pharma acted as a neutral platform for discussion between the different stakeholders.

25 proposals in pre-submission of joint call


At the closing of the first stage in August, 25 Expressions of Interest were submitted in response to CTMM, TI Pharma and BMM's Joint Call for proposals 'Imaging Guided and Targeted Drug Delivery'. The offices of the three institutes reviewed these pre-applications to decide upon allocation of the project to a specific institute. These results have been communicated to the applicants. They had until October 23 to write and submit a full proposal to the designated institute. The final decision on approval is expected in February 2010. The CTMM, TI Pharma and BMM Joint Call for Proposals was initiated to integrate the three Top Institutes' different disciplines in personalized medicine. The call is embedded at the interface of the three institutes.

Chris Lipinski lectures at FIGON


Mid October the annual FIGON Dutch Medicines Days (GeneesMiddelenDagen) were held in Congress hotel 'De Werelt', Lunteren. Over 800 people visited this year’s event, with sessions on (pre)clinical research topics and safety & regulatory affairs presented by more than fifteen scientific and branch organizations in the Netherlands.

Modeling and simulation approaches

In November 2009, Biologue/University of Copenhagen and TI Pharma are organizing a one-day workshop on drug discovery and development. The first workshop on November 19, 2009 is taking place in Copenhagen, Denmark. The second and identical workshop is taking place on November 24, in Leiden, The Netherlands. Both workshops emphasize the critical role of modeling and simulation in drug discovery strategies to increase the success rate. It offers a series of formal lectures by world experts. These lectures will be followed by round table discussions in the afternoon where the participants will have the opportunity to share their views with the guest speakers and other experts from Biologue/University of Copenhagen and TI Pharma. IMI announces second call

The 'Innovative Medicines Initiative' (IMI) publishes its second call for projects on October 30, 2009. The focus of this call will be on predicting the effectiveness of medicines (focusing on oncology, diabetes, infectious diseases and inflammation) and knowledge management.

  • On November 17, 2009, the IMI Joint Undertaking organizes an information meeting in Brussels. Click here for more information. 
  • On Friday November 20, 2009, EG-Liaison and TI Pharma are organizing an information meeting. During this meeting you will receive more information about IMI and details about the 2009 call. Also, important issues related to preparing a project application will be addressed. Use the registration form to register for this meeting.
